Victoria located on the atlantic coast of guyana 18 miles east of georgetown was the first village in guyana bought by the combined resoures of africans who had recently won there freedom from slavery. The community was initially established as a plantation called northbrook in november of 1839, eighty three ex- slaves from five nearby estates(Douchfour, Ann's Grove,Hope,Paradise,and Enmore) pooled their resources and bought the plantation Northbrook for 30,000 guilders each of the eighty three owned one plot of land.After its purchase it was renamed victoria in honor of the queen of england.It is credited with one of the first codes of local goverment in guyana. Established in 1845 the village grew up to become one of the leading exporters of products made from coconuts and cassava.
Leonora originally called plantation leonora is situated some nine miles from vreed -en-hoop the name leonora is dutch coming from the time of dutch occupation of the country.It oringinated from the names of two dutch children nora a girl a leo a boy.Leonora encompasses an area of some five square miles and was once part of the parish of st.luke it stretches from edinburgh in the east to stewartville in the west. It goes north to as far as the atlantic ocean and south to the conservancy.
