The Mighty Essquibo is the largest river in guyana also the third largest in south america it rises in the Kamoa mountains on the brazil border and flows north for over 600 miles, to enter the atlantic ocean through a large estuary that is filled with 365 islands. The essequibo river is fed by many tributaries, including the Rupununi, Potaro,Mazaruni,Siparuni,Kiyuwini, and the Cuyuni.

Demerara river flows in eastern guyana its source is found in the maccari mountains, and it flows north for 230 miles to enter the atlantic ocean at georgetown the capital city. The demerara is navigable for ocean going vessels also from about 15 to 20 miles form the mouth are the islands Inver,Borselem,Biesen. The major tributaries are
Kamuni,Kuliserabo,Madewini,Moblissa, Kara- kara rivers.
Berbice river is approximately 370 miles long, and flows north ward to the atlantic. the berbice is navigable for up to 175 miles from entrance. Crab island is located at the mouth berbice river. the town of new amsterdam is located on the river about four miles in side the river estuary.
Mazaruni river in northern guyana running from its source in the remote western forest of the pararaima mountains to its confluence with the cuyuni river near Bartica. As it decends from guiana highlands it runs south- east, past issano then northward to bartica the river is a source of alluvial gold.
Many thousands ounces of placier gold have been recovered from the area streams, gravels,risidual,placers,sapprolities.
Ireng river or( Mau river) forms part of guyana's western border with brazil. It flows through the valleys of the Parkaraima mountains for most of its lenght it is the only major river in guyana which flows from north to south.It is one of the northern most tributaries of the amazon river basin.It is considered to be the most picturesque of guyana's many rivers. Potaro river the source is in the mount Ayanganna area of the pakaraima mountains in north rupununi savannahs. The river runs for 140 miles nine waterfalls are found on the potaro also two islands. The world's famous Kaieteur falls also Tumatumari falls below kaieteur falls lies Amatuk, Waratuk waterfalls. Gold and diamonds were extracted from the river the largest so far is 25.67 carat diamond the mineral potarite is the name for the river when it was first discovered

Rupununi river is in southern guyana originating in the Kanuku mountains Rupununi drains into the essequibo but is also a part of the amazon river watershed during the rainy season it is connected to the Takutu river by the flooded pirara creek.
Abary river is a small river in northern guyana that drains into the atlantic ocean historic amerian settlements existed at tiger island.Taurakuli and doctor ho landing the largest arawak settlement was abary village in the upper abary river, which unfortunately now lies under the reservoir created by mahaica- machaicony flooding. In 1672, under an arrangment between the commander of essequibo and the secretary of the goverment of berbice,it was agree that the farming is the predominant human use of the lower reaches of the river.
Cuyuni river is in northern guyana and eastern venezuela it rises in the guiana highlands of venezuela.it descends northward to el dorado,venezuela,where it turns eastward and meanders through the tropical rain forest of guyana,forming the international boundary for approximately 60 miles it turns south east ward,flowing to its confluence with the mazaruni river. The kamaria hydroelectric power site is located on the cuyuni river in guyana the river is a source of alluvial gold.
Moruka river is in the barima-waini region of northern guyana settlements along the river include the santa rosa,kamwatta,and asakata. During the occupation period the dutch maintained a outposts on the moruka river.
Canje river, located in northeastern guyana,is the main tributary of the berbice river it runs roughly parallel to the atlantic ocean coast. The dutch established an outpost,concordia post on the river in 1763 a slave revolt began on two plantations on the canje river. The canje river supplies water to various sugar estates the pumps have been placed along the canje river and its leads to cultivation areas. The canje pheasant can be seen in this river which is guyana national bird.
