Georgetown capital city of Guyana population is about a quarter of a million people it is situated on the Atlantic ocean coast at the mouth of the Demerara river and was nick name Garden city of the caribbean.The city serves as the seat of the goverment.It also serves as the financial services centre. Georgetown is laid out in a north-south,east-west grid,interlaced with canals protected by kokers,or sluices built by the dutch and the british.The city is three feet below high tide level a long sea wall helps prevent flooding the city has an abundance of tree-lined streets and avenues and contains many old wooden colonial buildings and markets. Most of the main buildings are centred around the western region of the town.the western-central area is Independence square, Promenade gardens, the National libary, National museum, State house, Bank of Guyana, The georgetown cenotaph was builded in 1923 also Neo-Gotic city hall was builded in 1889 as well as victoria law courts in 1887, Stabroek market in 1792 containing the prominet cast iron clock tower that dominated the city sky line. The most famous stretch of seawall in guyana is the georgetown seawall. Seawall is the name given to the wall of concret built along the foreshore with the sea. Mostly in Demerara, it is part of the battle against the atlantic. Seawalls were found necessary because of constant erosion of land by the sea.Historians note that two estates the Kierfield and Sandy Point know to be existing in 1792 north of the present georgetown seawall were completely washed away in 1804 serious flooding resulting from breaching in the seawall took place at Enmore in 1955, Buxton 1959, Bladen Hall 1961. The georgetown seawall is a favorite place for afternoon walks also for listening to music.
Saint george's anglican catheral in georgetown is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world at the height of 132 ft it was the tallest wooden buildings in the world at one time but in 2003 the peri monastery near sapanta in romania was builded. Saint george's was designed by sir arthur blomfield on august 24,1892 the building was completed in 1899 it has been designated a national monument the church is build mainly of greenheart wood.
