History of schools

 Queen's College was established in 1844 as the queen's collehe grammar school for the boys by William percy austin dd,bishop of the anglican diocese of the then british guiana.The female equivalent to bishop's high school the first assembly was held august 1844 with an enrollment of fifteen boys.Although the school started out as an anglican church school, bishop austin was interested in making it a more broad-based institution to include non-anglicans. Its first adminstration,however,consisted only of members of the church of england.Formal classes commenced on august 15,1844 in the old colonial house what is known today as the victoria law courts.The original fifteen students had two tutors,with bishop austin himself becoming the first principal.In 1845 the school moved to Main& Murray streets its population was rapidly expanding and,with a student body of seventy and three tutors,another move was made in 1854 of its formal building at Carmichael and Quamina street 1876,the school became a colonial institution and was renamed "Queen's College" several additional changes in location took the school to the site of the ministry of health building (Vlissengen road and Brickdam) in 1918, and then to its present location in thomas lands( camp and thomas roads),where the facilities were formally open on december 3,1951. The school had a reputation for maintaining a rigorous academic environment with intense competition and graduated students who were eligible for admission to elite public and private universites around the world including the sarbonne,oxford, cambridge,harvard,and london university,colleges. The school became co-educational in 1975. The was accomplished by transferring approximately 150 girls into 2nd,3rd,upper 5th and lower 6th forms from bishop's high school which institution was also a single sex institution.Girls were also admitted into the first form.On november 16,1997 the school was partially destroyed in a fire the three-story centre clock,housing the auditoriun,offices and dining hall were destroyed.damage was estimated at one million USD.

The schoo's rich traditions included features that were characteristic of an english public school with a head boy or girl and prefects picked from students who were determinded to have the respect of their peers and to have displayed an appropriate standard of conduct.They provided student leadership additionally,students were placed in cross-grade groups called "houses" with a house master or house mistress,who was the teacher anda head of house. The house was essentially a school team the school's ten houses are named after past headmasters and masters ( teachers),members of the school,mambers of old colonial goverment or significant people to the former british guiana

Bishop's high school is a prestigious secondary school it was established in 1870 by the anglican church as a ladies school.The school later merged with Mrs vyfhuis school, also founded in 1870 and then with De saffon school. Mrs vyfhuis was offered the head mistress position of the combined schools in 1875. The schools first home was at brickdam and manget place,and then at "minto house" on waterloo street.It later moved to lamaha house at carmichael and lamaha streets, the property of bishop E.A. parry. In 1907 bishop e.a. parry moved the school to "woodside house" ( now known as transport house) on main street, and it became known as woodside house school.In 1921 the school moved once again to its present location at carmichael and murray streets in 1922 bishop e.a. parry retired and the school then became known as bishops high school bishop e.a. parry died in 1936 and the oswald parry hall was opened at the school.In january 1936, the school was handed over to the goverment of british guiana the new building was opened on january 5, 1946. the school's motto is " labor omnia vincit" there are five houses in bishops high school: allen house,baskett house,dewar house,vyfhuis house,and wearn house each named after a former head mistress of the school

Saint Rose's high school is serving students in grades 7-12 in Georgetown, Guyana.

History of school:

Six nuns and two postulants from the Ursuline convent in Athlone,Ireland traveled to the then-colony of british guiana in 1847. The sisters mothers mary bernard,perry mary de sales, molony mary magdalen doyle, mary regis o brien, superior, mary stanis, laus hearne, mary alphonsus O'beinem opened a seconary school for girls on august, 31, 1847. They built a three story structures to accomodate the growing student population in 1869 and 1925 the latter building included an auditorium that was the largest of its kind in georgetown for many years. Construction began on a gymnasium in 1935.The boarding program closed in 1953,following shortly by completion a new wing of the school,the marian wing,in 1954.New laboratories and classrooms were added in the late 1960's.

Saint Rose's accepted its first male students in 1975 a year before all guyana schools became state-controlled.Despite the goverment oversight, st.rose's maintained its logo (badge) of the ursuline shield.In 2005,a board of governors was established to manage st. rose's high school.

St. Rose's students are sorted into five houses their names, colors and mottos are: Brescia,red " he conquers who overcomes himself

cologne,yellow."nothing ventured nothing gained

lima,pink "excelsior"

loretto, blue "unity is strength"

merici,green "where there's a will there's a way"
